Former Southampton forward Josh Sims insists Ross County will fight until the very end to preserve their Premiership status against Aberdeen

Josh Sims insists Ross County will keep fighting right until the end of Sunday’s Premiership match against Aberdeen to avoid falling into the play-off.

Sims was the Staggies’ hero against Partick Thistle last year, scoring the decisive penalty in the shoot-out to keep County in the top flight.

While he would naturally prefer to avoid relying on a similar moment this season, he does think that experience could be useful going into this weekend’s match.

The 27-year-old will not want to know what is happening at Fir Park, where play-off rivals St Johnstone will be taking on Motherwell, but he acknowledges the players will have some idea of what is happening by the crowd’s reaction.

Instead, he is solely focused on getting the job done in Dingwall, and he has promised that the Staggies will be giving everything they have to win.

“We would much rather be in our situation,” Sims said.

“St Johnstone are relying on other results going their way, which is not a good place to be.

“We know what we’ve got to do, and we know if we get the win – regardless of whether they win or not – we will keep our safety in the league.

“I don’t want to know what is happening in the St Johnstone game, because then your mind is elsewhere.

“We know we’ve got a big task to do on Sunday. If we get the win, that’s it – we don’t need to worry about it.

“I’m sure there will be a few murmurings around the stadium, it’s always like that, but we will be focused on ourselves for sure.

“We never give up. This season, there have been times when we have been down a goal and we never know when to give up.

“That’s credit to everyone – the staff and the players. We have always been good in showing that heart, and digging in when times are tough.

“I’m sure on Sunday there will be times in the game when it’s going against us. We know for sure, everyone on that pitch will fight until the 90th minute to do their best.”

Sims is one of eight County players whose contract is due to expire this summer.

He joined the club in February 2022, and his time in Dingwall could be extended as he revealed initial conversations about his future have taken place.

“Talks are going on now with my agent, and we will see what will happen,” he added.

“My contract will be up at the end of the season. We are still in talks and we will see what happens.

“It has been up and down in terms of game time, and other things, but ultimately I have really enjoyed my time with County.

“When I first came in we got the top-six, which was really good. Last year it was a bit more difficult, so it has been up and down in terms of results as well.

“The staff, players and fanbase in general – the whole club has been really good with me.”
