The SPFL Competitions Working Group said there could be changes implemented to the Championship, League One and League Two.

However, it has also said there is no prospect of any changes to the current 12-team Scottish Premiership.

The SPFL Competitions Working Group met earlier today to discuss the possibility of league restructuring in the top four divisions in Scotland.

The discussions took place due to developments in European competitions which has led to more games in the Champions League, Europa League and the Conference League.

Options for the Premiership included reducing the number of teams to 10, scrapping the split with a 36-game season.

Reducing the Premiership to 10 teams would mean clubs playing 36 games compared to the current 38, with each team meeting four times and no split.

A 14 or 16-team top flight were also considered possibilities, with a number of options regarding splits likely to be under consideration.

However, it was announced today that there was no chance of changing the format for the Scottish Premiership.

But the Working Group have said there is a possibility the format of the Championship, League One and League Two could change in the future.

No details have been given on future changes, but an SPFL statement said: “The SPFL’s Competitions Working Group met on Tuesday, April 29 to discuss the possibility of league restructuring.

“It was agreed that there was no reasonable prospect of achieving consensus around a new format for the William Hill Premiership.

“There was, however, broad agreement around potential changes to the William Hill Championship, League 1 and League 2.

“These will be worked up with a view to conducting a consultation with clubs and other stakeholders.”

Inverness Caledonian Thistle secured their place in League One next season last week after a 3-0 win over Arbroath at the Caledonian Stadium.

They are now four points clear of the relegation zone with one game remaining in the regular campaign.

Ross County dropped into the Scottish Premiership relegation zone after a 2-0 defeat to Kilmarnock.

They are in the relegation play-off zone in 11th place, two points from safety with four games remaining.
