Manager Don Cowie pleased to see Ross County show battling qualities in League Cup group stage victory over Raith Rovers

Don Cowie was delighted that Ross County showed a different way to win against Raith Rovers in the League Cup group stage.

The Staggies had to battle for all three points, needing an 87th minute goal from George Harmon to finally see off the Kirkcaldy outfit.

Jordan White had earlier opened the scoring, with wing back James Brown claiming both assists, while Callum Smith levelled for Raith shortly after the restart.

“I’m delighted we’ve won the game,” Cowie explained afterwards.

“There were aspects that we can do better and improve, but we found a way to win the football match, and that’s what it’s all about

“Credit to Raith, we know they are a really good team and they caused us a lot of problems, but we stayed in the game at 1-1 and we always believe we can create an opportunity.

“George was very clinical at the end, so I’m delighted to have two wins in two games, and it sets us up nicely for the next two.”

“There are many different ways to win a football match, and it’s a good habit to get into no matter how they come.

“Yes, we want to be better, but it’s still really early and we’re still bedding new signings in and transitioning the squad.

“We’re sitting on six points, and now we can get ready for another really tough game on Tuesday away to Hamilton.”

It was notable that the substitutions Cowie made – bringing on Scott Allardice, Michee Efete, Alex Samuel and Andrew MacLeod at various points throughout the second half – all contributed to the positive result.

“The way football is with the five substitutions, they have a massive bearing on the game,” Cowie added.

“At this time of the season, we’ve only been back for four or five weeks, so asking players to play 90 minutes back-to-back is tough.

“I said before the game that the subs would be important, and they had an impact, so credit to them.”
